How do I make a complaint?

Registered Counselling therapists are mandated by legislation to ensure the public has access to a robust and objective Complaint and Professional Conduct process to investigate complaints against counselling therapists and impose discipline where appropriate. Please take time to review this Infographic with your Registered Counselling Therapist and to work with them to ensure your questions are answered. To file a complaint, simply click to go to the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists (NSCCT).

Is there a code of ethics that my therapist must follow?

As a Registered Counselling Therapist in the Province of Nova Scotia, we are required to follow a Code of Ethics which is published by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

Along with our ethical practice, therapists follow practice standards which serve to protect the public. These were developed by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association to provide direction and guidelines to enable its members, and other counsellors and psychotherapists in Canada, and counsellors/therapists-in-training, to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with the CCPA Code of Ethics.

How do you protect my confidential information that I provide to you?

The practice uses Jane which is the clinic software that you will see for booking, helpful reminders, forms, secure connections online as well as payments and charting. As a Canadian company, Jane provides a secure PIPEDA compliance platform which is commonly used by doctors and healthcare providers for comprehensive client care. A client’s records are only stored on Canadian servers and managed or archived in accordance with Canada’s privacy legislation.

Are there exceptions when a counsellor breaks confidence?

The ONLY circumstances which require reporting outside of the client-counselor is:

  • a court subpoenas,
  • any reference to child abuse (see link below),
  • when a client’s safety is in jeopardy, an intention to harm self; or
  • when a client intends to harm someone else.
